Supported living

Living independently with support where you need it.

Supported living means that you live independently — in your own home and with your own key — while a regular support worker helps you with the things that are still difficult. Think of organising the household, handling money and paperwork, building a daily rhythm or keeping in touch with the people around you. You stay in charge; the housing support moves with what you need.

This way of living suits adults in the Nijmegen region who cannot (yet) live fully on their own, but for whom sheltered housing would be too much care. For example people with a mild intellectual disability, with mental health problems (GGZ), or with a life that has been knocked off balance by circumstances. We also support status holders (refugees with a residence permit) and asylum seekers who still have to find their way in the Netherlands — culture-sensitive and without judgement.

How does that work at Divers Zorg? After you register, there is an intake with a behavioural specialist and a support worker, followed by a period of observation. In this way we first build trust — the presence approach is the heart of our work — and then set goals together that you can reach. In multidisciplinary reviews we regularly look at whether you are growing towards more independence and whether the support still fits.

You pay for supported living at Divers Zorg with a pgb (a personal budget you use to buy your own care), which you apply for under the Wmo (the Dutch Social Support Act, arranged by your municipality) or the Wlz (the Dutch Long-Term Care Act). Not sure whether supported living in Nijmegen suits you, or would you like to know how the application works? Please get in touch — we can be reached 24/7 and are happy to think along with you, without obligation.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about supported living

What is the difference between supported living and sheltered housing?

With supported living you live independently and the support comes to you at agreed times. With sheltered housing you live in a protected setting where support is close by day and night. Which form fits depends on how much support you need; we are glad to advise you about that.

Am I eligible for supported living in Nijmegen?

Supported living is there for adults who need support to be able to live independently, for example because of a mild intellectual disability or mental health problems. Usually you need an indication (the decision that says which care you may receive) from the Wmo or the Wlz. In a first meeting, without obligation, we look at your situation together.

How do I register?

You can register through our registration form, by phone on 06 4849 6899 or by e-mail. A referrer, a family member or a partner organisation may also contact us. After you register, we plan an intake with a behavioural specialist and a support worker.
